Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 9 Blog Tour!

Welcome to day three of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Blog Tour! I'm so happy to have my regular blog followers and blog hop guests stop by today :o)

This is the first time I've submitted a block for consideration, and I could not be more excited to have Dashing Geese included in Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks volume 9. Here it is, block #883 on page 67 :o)

Magazine Shot
Dashing Geese found in Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks vol. 9

Dashing Geese is a combination block containing a small bit of paper piecing for the geese units and regular piecing for block construction. You can read a bit about what inspired me to try designing a block here.

I had so much fun coming up with a design. To begin the process I thought about what kind of quilt block I am drawn to...often these are traditional blocks with a history to tell. I selected the churn dash. Next, I considered what I could do to make this block my own. The churn dash has great possibilities when you consider the "real estate" available in the rectangular areas of the block. Mulling over the options I decided to fill the rectangles with flying geese.

Due to the dimensions of a churn dash I could not use the 1:2 ratio of traditional flying geese. Instead, I drafted a paper piecing template to create the geese unit. I don't have special software and just used the Drawing toolbar of MicroSoft Word to work out the specifics.

Depending on the fabric chosen Dashing Geese can look contemporary or traditional. Fabric placement also impacts how the block looks. Here are a few different "looks" for Dashing Geese:

Dashing Geese Mosiac

Quiltmaker's invited block designers to make and submit a quilt featuring their block for inclusion in the Designer Gallery section of the magazine. Quilts submitted will also be on display in the Golden, Colorado office gallery for the summer! So fun :o)

Dashing Geese Wall Hanging
Dashing Geese wall hanging. Photographed by Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks.

For this Dashing Geese mini quilt I used my all-time favorite fabric, Rouenneries by French General. In each block I changed up the fabric placement or colors to create a sampler-style quilt.

Magazine give-away! Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, volume 9 goes on sale May 6, but Quiltmaker's Magazine is going to give one of my readers a free issue!  Just leave a comment telling me if you are a contemporary/modern quilter, or if traditional is more your look. I'd also love to hear what fabric line and colors you'd use to make a Dashing Geese block...I'm always looking for creative options :o) This magazine drawing is open to everyone-international included.

In addition, I'm holding a special give-away! Follow my blog and be entered into a drawing for this Dashing Geese pillow featuring DS Quilts fabrics, hand-quilting, gathered borders, and an envelope closure on the back! In your comment tell me how you follow me (Bloglovin', email, Google/Blogger Follower) to be eligible to win! This drawing is open to everyone who follows my blog-international included. Check out the sidebar on the right if you'd like to become a follower...and I hope you will :o) (Drawing is for pillow cover only, pillow form not included.)

  5. Hi Debbie, Congratulations for your publication. Your block is great and I enjoyed seeing the various colour placement option on your mini. I could see myself making one of those in solids or with some Bonnie and Camille. I follow you on Bloglovin and you are on my list of favourite blogs on my own blog. To think that I "knew" (blog-wise) you from your first post... Enjoy the hype!

  7. Congrats on your first! Love your update of a traditional block. I'm a contemporary traditionalist quilter - I enjoy it all. I'm a new follower with Bloglovin'. Thanks.

  8. What a cool block! I lean more toward contemporary/modern quilting but even things called modern seem to use a lot of traditional blocks, so there is plenty of overlap. I do love bright, modern fabrics. I would make your block in aqua and lime with a navy background -- that's my current favorite color combination for pretty much anything!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Churn Dash is my favorite block (and the first block I ever made) - love your take on it! I'm more traditional in my work, but I love the modern quilts that are coming out and am thinking more and more about trying one. I think my first shot at this block will be with Fall colors.

  10. Your block is great! Love the flying geese to give the Churn Dash block a new look. I like contemporary quilts. I would use something from Timeless Treasures in bright colors. Congratulations on your block being selected. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  11. I am a mostly traditional quilter. Based on your pillow example, I think I'd do the churn dash in a blue to go on my couches. The geometric design would nicely offset the floral of the couch.

  12. I'm a traditional quilter--I love scrappy quilts and sampler quilts. Great block--love seeing how it looks in different fabrics!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Your block is beautiful! I am a traditional quilter but I love the look of modern quilts--just need to make a few of them... I like the blue or brown setting best so I'd likely go with one of them if I used your block in a quilt. Thanks for sharing!

  21. I am more of a traditional quilter, but love the spin you put on the churndash block. I love the blue sample you posted and being I am partial to blues, I would make the block in indigo and cream/tan colors. I also could see it done in scrappy "made" fabric and muslin. Great idea for a charity quilt.

  22. Congrats, Deb, how exciting for you! I absolutely love your block, and it truly deserves recognition. I can't wait to make this block in Civil War prints.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm more of a traditionalist. I love the look of an old quilt, or one that is made to look old. I'd probably use blues and nuetrals for my block, like Piecemakers or Indigo Nature. Thanks so much for the chance.

I am at heart a contemporary modern quilter who loves bold colors, patterns and prints, think Kaffe Fassett or Amy Butler. I would probably use one of Amy Butler's fabrics to make this block.

    ReplyDelete
  68. My first thought was using solids for the geese in 4 different basic colors with a novelty print in the large triangles with those same colors-hmm now to find those in my stash!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Thank you for sharing your blog. I love novelty fabrics but i belongs to scrappy quilters. I mostly use these nice modern fabric for borders and back side.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Very nice block. Congrats and thanks for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I've been quilting so long that the lines are blurred for me between traditional and contemporary, so I'm going to say eclectic. What a great idea for making a block your own. I would probably make dashing geese in low volume neutrals.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I like both modern and traditional quilts. Your block would look great in black and white.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Absolutely no doubt, traditional all of the way.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I'm usually a traditional quilter, but for this block I might choose dark gray and white, a more contemporary look. It would echo the colors of our local Canadian geese.

    ReplyDelete

  121. I like both, though I'm newer to modern quilts as I love tradition and reproduction quilts (and samplers). For the block, I'd be tempted to do the background in Tula Pink's Acacia (can you picture that raccoon peeking through the center of the block?) with the churn dash in a complementary very light solid so it would really pop.

  122. I am more of a traditional quilter, but do like both types. Great block. Love the combo of flying geese and the churn dash.

  127. I'm not sure what I am, I like them both. If I like the design, it doesn't matter what type it is. I love your block. I have a stack of Esprit de Noel that would look good, or brights with a black background maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  132. I am a combination of traditional and modern--maybe that makes me a modern traditionalist. I really like the solid color block and would probably make them in black and white.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I'm a traditional quilter, but I have seen some modern quilts that I really like. I like the clean lines and the open spaces in the modern quilts that I've seen lately. So, that's another project added to my quilter's bucket list! I think I'd like to try your block in light blue and red. It wouldn't be a combination that I would normally think of, but I just saw a quilt made in that combination, and it was gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  134. I am definitely a modern quilter, but I am always drawn to the traditional blocks. I often start trying to make something traditional, but by the time my colour choices get in there and value placement... It just doesn't happen

    ReplyDelete
  135. My quilting tastes seem to change every few years. First I wanted everything cute, with novelty fabrics, then I wanted traditional, with history from reading the "Elm Creek Quilts" series. Lately, Bonnie Hunter has me completed hooked on scrap quilting! Wonder what it will be next year! I'm open to the possibilites!!

    ReplyDelete

  151. I'm more of a traditional quilter, although the new modern blocks to appeal to me at times. I would love to do your block with a bright, bold, large print Kaffe Fassett pattern with a solid white background. What a gorgeous pattern!

  152. I don't have one set style, I like it all and love learning something new. How about trying batiks or 30's repros, I think just about anything would look good.

  153. Such a cool twist on an old favorite. Great block. I'm more of a traditional quilter, but I'm always open to new ideas. Thanks for the giveaway.

  154. I am all over the map--traditional, modern, careful, wonky. I think this would look great in reds, blues, grays, and creams for a Quilt of Valor.

  156. I'd say I was a traditional quilter, but lately I've really been drawn to the modern quilts.

  157. I would say I am reasonably traditional in my quilting, but I do use modern fabrics.

  158. I am following on Bloglovin. I really like the possibilities of this block. Traditional catches my eye.

  159. I like to make both traditional and modern styles in my quilting. I would probably use red and white for your design to be more traditional and to be on the modern side I would choose aqua and whte.

  160. I make all different kinds of blocks, depends on what catches my eye. I think this would look good scrappy with whites and reds.

  163. I am a quilter who likes modern colors in more traditional block settings. I am getting more modern in my settings as time goes by.

  164. Great block! I like both modern and traditional and have done both so I don't really prefer one over the other.

  169. Heartiest congratulations, Debbie!! It's a great, and innovative, block, and really appeals to traditional and modern quilters alike! What fun! :) Personally, I prefer the yellow and white one. I love yellow, but I also am a modern quilter, so I need there to be lots of white space. :) Great job!

  170. I consider myself a "modern" quilter, but I have been sewing quilted items for a number of decades now! I would like to see your block in bright solids!

  174. I would make this block in pale grey and pink solids. I would only use the two colours and choose your third layout. I'm a great fan of flying geese, and need to improve my paper piecing skills. This would be a great opportunity. I am now a modern quilter, but I cut my teeth on "traditional".

  180. I guess I am a more modern quilter. I like quilts that look like real pictures, mostly applique. I was going to state I would use your block with an orange and white but I scrolled down and you already did that. Love that pillow.

I think I am a traditional quilter leaning towards modern.

  182. I am a BRIGHT & CHEERY colors quilter! The pattern can be traditional or modern so I'd have to make your Dashing Geese from a variety of polka dot fabrics!
