This is the first time I've submitted a block for consideration, and I could not be more excited to have Dashing Geese included in Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks volume 9. Here it is, block #883 on page 67 :o)

Dashing Geese is a combination block containing a small bit of paper piecing for the geese units and regular piecing for block construction. You can read a bit about what inspired me to try designing a block here.
I had so much fun coming up with a design. To begin the process I thought about what kind of quilt block I am drawn to...often these are traditional blocks with a history to tell. I selected the churn dash. Next, I considered what I could do to make this block my own. The churn dash has great possibilities when you consider the "real estate" available in the rectangular areas of the block. Mulling over the options I decided to fill the rectangles with flying geese.
Due to the dimensions of a churn dash I could not use the 1:2 ratio of traditional flying geese. Instead, I drafted a paper piecing template to create the geese unit. I don't have special software and just used the Drawing toolbar of MicroSoft Word to work out the specifics.
Depending on the fabric chosen Dashing Geese can look contemporary or traditional. Fabric placement also impacts how the block looks. Here are a few different "looks" for Dashing Geese:
Quiltmaker's invited block designers to make and submit a quilt featuring their block for inclusion in the Designer Gallery section of the magazine. Quilts submitted will also be on display in the Golden, Colorado office gallery for the summer! So fun :o)

For this Dashing Geese mini quilt I used my all-time favorite fabric, Rouenneries by French General. In each block I changed up the fabric placement or colors to create a sampler-style quilt.

ReplyDeleteWhat a cool block! I lean more toward contemporary/modern quilting but even things called modern seem to use a lot of traditional blocks, so there is plenty of overlap. I do love bright, modern fabrics. I would make your block in aqua and lime with a navy background -- that's my current favorite color combination for pretty much anything!
ReplyDeleteChurn Dash is my favorite block (and the first block I ever made) - love your take on it! I'm more traditional in my work, but I love the modern quilts that are coming out and am thinking more and more about trying one. I think my first shot at this block will be with Fall colors.

ReplyDeleteI am a mostly traditional quilter. Based on your pillow example, I think I'd do the churn dash in a blue to go on my couches. The geometric design would nicely offset the floral of the couch.

I love the blue sample you posted and being I am partial to blues, I would make the block in indigo and cream/tan colors. I also could see it done in scrappy "made" fabric and muslin. Great idea for a charity quilt.

ReplyDeleteI like both, though I'm newer to modern quilts as I love tradition and reproduction quilts (and samplers). For the block, I'd be tempted to do the background in Tula Pink's Acacia (can you picture that raccoon peeking through the center of the block?) with the churn dash in a complementary very light solid so it would really pop.

ReplyDeleteI'm a traditional quilter, but I have seen some modern quilts that I really like. I like the clean lines and the open spaces in the modern quilts that I've seen lately. So, that's another project added to my quilter's bucket list! I think I'd like to try your block in light blue and red. It wouldn't be a combination that I would normally think of, but I just saw a quilt made in that combination, and it was gorgeous!

ReplyDeleteI like to make both traditional and modern styles in my quilting. I would probably use red and white for your design to be more traditional and to be on the modern side I would choose aqua and whte.

What fun! :) Personally, I prefer the yellow and white one. I love yellow, but I also am a modern quilter, so I need there to be lots of white space. :) Great job!

ReplyDeleteI would make this block in pale grey and pink solids. I would only use the two colours and choose your third layout. I'm a great fan of flying geese, and need to improve my paper piecing skills. This would be a great opportunity. I am now a modern quilter, but I cut my teeth on "traditional".

I am a BRIGHT & CHEERY colors quilter! The pattern can be traditional or modern so I'd have to make your Dashing Geese from a variety of polka dot fabrics!
