Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 10 Blog Tour

QMMS-140050-cover_200
My block made the front cover :o)

{Welcome Friends}

What a privilege it is to be part of the monumental tenth issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks. This publication provides such a wonderful opportunity for both new and experienced designers to share their creative ideas. This is the second issue I've had a block in...the first was my Dashing Geese block in Volume 9.

I'm over-the-moon about finding my block, Nested Bear Paw, on the front cover! There may have been some dancing around the house when I learned of this :o)

Here's a larger picture of Nested Bear Paw (Block 982, p. 59) so you can get a better look at it:

Nested Bear Paw
Nested Bear Paw by Debbie Martin

Inspiration for the Nested Bear Paw quilt block came from a wool felt wall hanging I designed and made. Inside each large bear paw is a smaller set of paws.

Nested Bear Paws
Wool felt wall hanging designed & stitched by Debbie Martin

When making this design with wool felt it was pretty straight forward to get the layout to work; however, when it came to translating it into a quilt block I had to rethink the dimensions in order to get the small set of paws to fit inside the larger paw. It took me a while to get this figured out.

This is a block that lends itself to both modern and traditional quilts. When making my block for the magazine (picture above) I used Moda's Puzzle Pieces in Jacquard Black for the background and P&B Textiles Color Weave in Orange and Light Aqua for the paws. These fabrics tend to have a modern feel.

Showing that Nested Bear Paw is also a block friendly with more traditional quilts I used reproduction fabric when I put together a wall hanging to send in for the Designers Gallery (page 16.)

Fabrics for this mini quilt include Amity and Love Knots from the Ladies Album collection by Barbara Brackman, and Hope Chest by Laundry Basket Quilts - all from Moda Fabrics. Here's how Nested Bear Paw would look as a full size bed quilt:

I used photo editing software to create this

Quiltmaker's is generously giving one of my blog readers a free issue of 100 Blocks, Volume 10. To be entered into the drawing just leave me a comment telling me how long you've been quilting and how you got started. If you suspect you may be a "no reply" blogger please make sure to include your email address in your comment. I'll draw a random winner on Friday evening, November 21.

Thank you so much for stopping by Shadows of the Blue Ridge :o) If you'd like to follow my blog in the upper right side bar are options for BlogLovin', email, and Google Friends Connect. I hope you are enjoying this special week and visiting the blogs of many block designers, as well as sponsors to the blog tour!

I was recently widowed and was just over two cancer operations and needed a pick-me up. a whole new world opened up for me once she got me started.

  10. Hi Debbie, great block. So intricate. What is the size of the small HST in the bear paw? 1 inch? I have been quilting for about 10 years, though I have made several simple tied blankets before that when my sister and friends started having babies.

  11. I started quilting about ten years ago when my sons left home and went to university. I attended a class in a local quilt shop and learnt so many different techniques on a sampler quilt. Since then I have made more than a hundred quilts - mostly crib size for charity for the children's hospital.

  34. I've been quilting since I was just a little girl, maybe 5 or 6 when I stood to the side of Mom's old black Singer and snipped apart her chain piecing. Then I got to where I could iron the blocks for her. Next step was taking the SCRAPS she was through with and cutting itsy bitsy triangles, sewing them together to make pinwheels and making a lap quilt which I still have today, 45 years later!

  45. I've been quilting for about 15 years. I actually learned in high school over 30 years ago, but then didn't touch it until I happened to see a quilting show on PBS. That totally inspired me because of the innovative rotary cutter and mat system rather than tracing templates. I haven't stopped since!

  48. I have been quilting for about 3 years but have always had an interest in it and just decided one day to look on the internet for information on quilting. Was I ever amazed at all the inspiration out there not to mention the giveaways. I won the first one I entered which was 6 one yard cuts of a fabric line. It was amazing to see how far fabric had come for quilting and I have not looked back. There is always something new to learn.

I started quilting almost nine years ago -- an LQS was doing a BOM and I wanted to give it a try. I almost didn't finish that quilt (I thought I had to hand piece/hand quilt the whole thing) . . . but I did finish it and the rest is history!! :)

  57. I estimate I've been sporadically quilting for over 30 years. All the women's magazines were promoting older crafts leading up to the bicentennial and the needlework world exploded and hasn't stopped. A local church--which had an annual quilt show--offered a class and I took it to learn more.

  59. I have been quilting for over 40 years when I made a quilt as you go quilt for my in-laws. I worked so hard on that quilt trying to get it done in time to go out on the only plane that was flying into camp until the next one in 6 weeks. I ran out of matching fabric for the binding and it was finished in multicolors. When they passed away I got the quilt back and it always brings back those memories of the logging camp so long ago. That is what many quilts have, good memories. Thanks for sharing your block.

  87. congrats again. this block is really cute. I love how the little ones are nested in the big one. Momma has her little ones covered. I watched my mom and grandmother and her sisters all quilt by hand. It just held no interest for me because it just took way too long. About 5 yrs. ago I went to a church social where they were quilting baby blankets for an orphanage. I like the idea so I thought how hard could this be? LOL Just a little different than sewing garments. I really didn't pick it up again until about 2 yrs. ago and am loving quilting by machine.

  144. I love the idea of making a traditional block into a slightly more modern idea. Such a good feel for both styles all in one! :) I've seen quilting for only about 4-5 years but the urge to learn more and get better has me completely obsessed! (In a good way, of course! ) I have SO many quilts I've GOT to make & never enough time!

  157. Your block is very unique and creative!! Thank You for the nice design!! I had the good fortune to have been brought up with 'quilting' as my Mom and all of my Aunts were always sewing and working on projects.
