First, I'm so happy to introduce my block, Flowers for the Cabin. Maybe you can see why it has this name?

I have to say this issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks contained quite a surprise for me. I was not at all expecting to see this block when I opened my designer preview issue of Volume 13 about a month ago. You see, Flowers for the Cabin has a bit of a backstory which can be found here if you're interested.
Flowers for the Cabin makes a perfect springtime block using the light pinks and crisp white fabrics shown above. In my area of the country we have a huge celebration each spring called the Apple Blossom Festival and these fabric are perfect for it :o)
However, Flowers for the Cabin can easily become a basket of flowers suited for the harvest season by changing out the floral fabric, as shown in this example:

I think a Flowers for the Cabin block would make a perfect center for a medallion quilt. Or, maybe use it in a four-block arrangement like one of the examples shown below. I just pasted an image of my block in Google Slides and copies/rotated/added colored squares to create these mock-ups.

That is a great block! My sewing machine is very old, but working like a tractor (as we say in Switzerland, lol) but i dream of a machine with quiltstitches and also a nicer zigzag stich than mine has. Hope you find a machine you will really love!
ReplyDeleteLovely block! I immediately thought this would make a nice corner border block for an chain quilt. My sewing machine is about 5 yrs old. I love all the new bells and whistles but dislike having to take it in to be oiled once a year.

ReplyDeleteI really like that basket block with the chain. Great idea! I have a Bernina that I adore. Sews like a charm but the drawback is it's weight. It is hard to take anywhere. I also have a lower end Janome and it, too, is a great machine and lighter weight for traveling.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to use a log cabin. Definitely will have to try it. I have 2 Pfaffs. The latest one is a quilt expression 4.2 and I love it. I plan to learn how to machine quilt on it. I've had it a year but we moved in the last 6 months so I got behind on that front. Have loads of tops to quilt and once they are done I get to start on all the projects I want to do including trying your log cabin basket. I think I'll try and paper piece it. funnylady93@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteI have 3 Singers. one was my mothers, from around 1970's, one is a 100th anniversary edition and the other is a featherweight. The featherweight is awesome for quilting.
ReplyDeleteI have an Elna & Babylock Symphony sewing machine. I've had the Elna for over 15 years. This was the first sewing machine that I had that wasn't a hand me down from someone else. I love it for piecing. I purchased the symphony last year for quilting but I've done some stitch in the ditch but this week I'm going to do my first queen size quilt in free motion quilting. I think I've practiced enough.

I have a Janome 6600 which I love, but servicing is a distance problem. I bought a Juki 2010Q thinking I could do most of the servicing myself, but I hate it. It shreds every thread I use and I've had tons of tension problems.

Congratulations, your block is great! I have a Bernina 440 that I love. I use it every day. I also have a Bernina 330 which is lighter that I take to classes and retreats. I love both my Berninas and they work great for piecing and quilting. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of this magazine issue.

Lovely block! I bought a Janome MC6600p five years ago and have had no problems with it at all. My previous machines (Brother, Husqvarna Viking) had tension issues almost daily.

ReplyDeleteClever basket out of log cabin :-) I have a few sewing machines...some old singers and 2 newer Berninas. I definitely love my 1090 Bernina the best. The stitches are sweet and the mechanics less fussy. My Bernina embroidery machine has some weird quirks ;-)

I have three sewing machines. I inherited my grandmother's Singer from the 70's. I like using it, but it is a bit of a set up because it will not sit properly in it's table when not in use (it is suppose to latch to the table so that you can close it down, but the machine no longer can latch and it is a bit of a hassle to line up everything up properly for it to sit in the table). I love my Baby Lock Amelia for it small size and easy to travel to class weight. I also bought a ulna excellence 760 for at the house and really enjoy using it also.
I love my 20 year old Bernina and my 2 year old Bernina, and my one year old lightweight Babylock, for travel of course.

ReplyDeleteI have both a Bernina Quilters Edition and a BabyLock Symphony. There are things I love and things I hate about both. I think the Bernina is a workhorse but it does have tension problems. I was using it for machine embroidery but found that boring and besides, I think it is hard to use the same machine for two different activities. Good luck. and by the way, I like your block.

ReplyDeleteI collect vintage and treadle sewing machines... of all of those my two favorite machines are a Singer 66 treadle with a perfect stitch and a wonderful Davis Vertical Feed treadle that has an "integrated walking foot"... the needle moves the fabric, it will piece and quilt just about anything. ReplyDeleteFun block! I have a Bernina that I take to retreats and a Juki that I use everyday. I love them both for different reasons, but sure wish my Bernina had the foot pedal thread cutter--it's hard when one machine cuts the thread and the other lifts the needle--LOL!

ReplyDeleteI have a Pfaff Expression 3.0 and I love it. It is reliable and sews beautifully. I have given it quite a work-out and it has made me a better sewist and quilter. The only thing I would change is that i wish I'd gotten the 4.0 with the knee lift; at the time, I wasn't doing any machine quilting and didn't think I'd get much use out of it, and couldn't fit it into my budget. Now I wish I'd splurged, because I love this machine and will stick with it forever and would like to have that one capability.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your block! Just bought a new Viking as none of the other brands control thread tensions properly. I like to make clothing and reversible table runners and frequently use different colored threads top and bottom. I've been sewing for close to 50 years and have been a textile 4-H judge, so I know how to set thread tension. These newer machines always show the top thread on the bottom and vice versa - drives me nuts! Love my Viking!!
ReplyDeleteVery creative block...I like the way it looks when all the lines cross in the middle. I currently sew on a Bernina 830, and for the most part love it...Love the larger harp size in the middle. I would make that a must for any new machine because I quilt all my own quilts and it makes it sew much easier to squish the quilt bulk in there. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI have 3 Singer's, one low end, one middle, one high end. Each have their benefits. Love them all, learned to FMQ on the middle and high end machines. There is a Bernina in my future, my family know's I would trade in the family car for one.

ReplyDeleteI did my piecing on a hand-me-down from my MIL (a Janome MC9000) for probably 15 years. It is a wonderful machine! This past Christmas my husband talked me into upgrading. I wasn't sure, as I thought I had everything I needed. But my new fancy Baby Lock Crescendo has some wonderful features that my old one didn't. So now I love it too.

It is a model made purposely for use in School Home Economic classes taught in the public schools. I love this machine..

ReplyDeleteI just acquired a Janome 7700 which is a big step up from my 35yo Viking Husqvarna. I am loving the "new" features and the huge area to the right of the needle. A few quirks that I will need to learn but I am enjoying the process. A new machine is such a treat!
ReplyDeleteI have a Bernina 820 and I like it. One of the reasons I wanted it was for the 12" space as I want to machine quilt my own quilts. My old machine was a Bernina that I bought in 1997 and still use it.

ReplyDeleteI love my Bernina 1090, and I've had her for 20 years now! She does so many things, including FMQ, and is reliable and accurate and strong. I recently got a Bernette Chicago 7, to get started with embroidery and do some of my piecing. But I really want a longarm or a sit-down like a Sweet Sixteen--I love quilting my quilts myself, but my Bernina is pretty small to do that in a timely manner.

Sadly, I haven't had a chance to try my new Juki yet because Chemo brain just doesn't want to concentrate yet. I hope to very soon!

It has been a good machine, but I really liked my Husqvarna that my parents gave me when I graduated from college, many years ago. I used to have a New Home and really liked the alphabet that it printed out. No matter what machine you get, it will be a lot faster than sewing by hand. Love your block. I have a non-computerized Huskavarna model called Madison that my husband bought me in 2006. It is so trustworthy and faithful with no bells and whistles, that she goes by the name "Maddy!"Congrats on your block!!

ReplyDeleteI have a Necchi which I use for piecing and applique (as well as all regular sewing), since it has zig-zig stitch etc. I also have a brother which only does straight stitch but has a bigger opening that I use for free-motion quilting. I'd love to have one machine which is good at both tasks.

ReplyDeleteI have two machines--a Babylock Tempo and a Brother VM5100. The Brother can do so much more and has a larger throat area. That's my recommendation.
